Garden Offers November Classes for Adults, Youth and Families

BELMONT, N.C. – Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden’s educational programs for a variety of ages continue throughout the month of November, featuring Mommy (or Daddy) and Me Mondays in Lost Hollow, the children’s garden. Other classes include yoga, photography, horticulture topics, birds and more.

Upcoming classes in November include:

Digital SLR V: Macro and Close-up Photography

Nov. 1; 1:30 – 4 p.m. instructed by Dave Kelly, owner DEK Photography

One of our most advanced offerings, macro and close-up photography presents unique challenges. These challenges and their solutions will be covered along with the equipment needed to excel. This class is $46 (Garden members receive a 15% off discount). Register online at www.dsbg.org.

Mommy (or Daddy) and Me Mondays

Nov. 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30; 10 – 11 a.m.

Bring your child (up to age 5) to explore nature in a safe, nurturing environment. Activities may include stories, songs, planting seeds, crafts and playtime in Lost Hollow. This program is $10 per family and Garden members receive a 15% discount. Register online at www.dsbg.org. 

Saturday Morning Yoga in the Garden

Nov. 7, 14 & 21; 9:30 – 10:30 a.m., instructed by Rasheedah Hasan of Raha and Friends Yoga, Certified Yoga Instructor. Reduce stress, strengthen, relax, and enjoy the balance yoga can bring to your life in our beautiful Garden setting. Learn how to connect breathing to yoga postures and proper alignment for your body. This class is suited for both beginners and intermediate students. Please bring your own yoga mat. This class is $40 for five classes or $12 per class and Garden members receive a 15% discount. Register online at www.dsbg.org. 

Horticultural Highlight Walk

Nov. 7 & 21; 1 p.m.

Join our professional horticulture staff as they take you on a custom tour of the Garden. Guides will highlight what’s in bloom, seasonally relevant gardening tips and behind-the-scenes details.

Papercrafting for Autumn

Nov. 8; 1:15 – 3:15 p.m.

Crisp fall air and striking seasonal colors provide perfect inspiration for autumn papercrafting! Projects will include autumn treats and lovely Thanksgiving greetings. And Suzanne Patz always has fun surprises to make each class a special experience! This class is $30 (Garden members receive a 15% off discount). Register online at www.dsbg.org.

Birding Walk

Nov. 10; 9 – 10 a.m.

Stroll through the Garden’s Meadowood Walk and Persimmon Trail to scout for seasonal birds, observe nesting patterns and establish a basis for bird counts with Garden birding volunteers. Bring binoculars if you have a pair. Some previous walks have documented as many as 24 different species of bird! Free with Garden admission.

Basic Flash Photography

Nov. 15; 1:30 – 4 p.m. instructed by Dave Kelly, owner DEK Photography

Learning the correct way to use flash will add a great deal to anyone’s basic photography knowledge. This class will cover techniques for using a digital SLR camera’s built-in, pop-up flash and the optional flash that fits on the hot shoe, as well as both TTL and manual flash. The basic-level course will not cover such things as studio flash. This class is $46 (Garden members receive a 15% off discount). Register online at www.dsbg.org.

Karma Yoga in the Garden

Nov. 21; 1 – 3:30 p.m., instructed by Rasheedah Hasan of Raha and Friends Yoga, Certified Yoga Instructor. Get in the mindset of giving thanks leading up to the holiday season. This 2.5-hour workshop is complete with storytelling and yoga. Great for families and friends of all ages. Please bring your own yoga mat. Holiday Candle Making       

Nov. 21; 3 – 5 p.m., instructed by Noelle France of Bayberry Woods. This beginning candle making will allow you to create your own scented candle to use for the holidays. To add a personal touch, bring your own glass container of 8 oz. or less. This class is $50 per guest and Garden members receive a 15% discount. Register online at www.dsbg.org.

Holiday Wreath Workshop

Nov. 29; 12:30 – 2:30 p.m., instructed by Halle Russell. Build a stunning custom wreath from scratch and decorate it for your front door, to top your fireplace, or as a gift to a neighbor! This class is $55 per guest and Garden members receive a 15% discount. Register online at www.dsbg.org.
