Garden Offers Digital Photography Workshops

BELMONT, N.C. Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden offers its popular photography workshops in August with courses designed for a variety of skill levels; from beginners learning the basics to experts who want to hone their skills, the Garden offers a photography course for everyone.

In order to accommodate guests with different skill levels, the Garden offers classes from the following instructors: Dave Kelly, owner of DEK photography, an internationally recognized wildlife photographer and an Adobe Certified Instructor; Phyllis Peterson, an award winning amateur photographer and Haley Glatzer. These instructors and the classes they teach are noted below.

Lectures and demonstrations take place in the classroom, followed by an opportunity to practice newly learned skills out in the Garden. Upcoming classes include:

Photography for Beginners, instructed by Haley Glatzer Saturday, Aug. 4, 9:30 a.m. noon. This course is for those who have little or no experience. It is an excellent introduction to Basic Digital SLR Photography. Glatzer will guide participants through basic camera functions for SLR cameras as well as point- and-shoot cameras. This class is $50 for members and $60 for non-members.

Catch that Shot!: Smart Phone Photography, instructed by Phyllis Peterson Saturday, Aug. 4, 1:30 4 p.m. Great shots abound, but a camera is not always handy. Learn simple but effective tips for using your Smart-Phone or I-Pad to ensure that you can make the most of opportunistic images. This class is $50 for members and $60 for non-members.

Photographing Hummingbirds, instructed by Dave Kelly Saturday, Aug. 18, 9:30 a.m. noon. Photograph hummingbirds in flight or hovering near flowers and feeders as you learn techniques that will improve your ability to capture these small, fast-moving jewels through your camera lens. This class is $50 for members and $60 for non-members.

Macro and Close-up Photography, instructed by Dave Kelly, DEK Photography Saturday, Aug. 18, 1:30 4 p.m. This course addresses the unique challenges that macro and close-up photography present, and how to meet those challenges. Techniques as well as equipment will be discussed. This class is $50 for members and $60 for non-members.

Basic Digital SLR Photography, instructed by Dave Kelly, DEK Photography Saturday, Aug. 25, 9:30 a.m. noon. Learn how to set up your digital SLR camera, discover how to get perfect pictures in less than perfect lighting, and learn how to utilize all the shooting modes, buttons and dials to get the images you want. This class is $50 for members and $60 for non-members.

Basic Flash Photography, instructed by Dave Kelly, DEK Photography Saturday, Aug. 25, 1:30 4 p.m. This course covers the basics of flash photography using a single small flash, with emphasis on using an optional flash that fits on the cameras hot shoe. The instructor will discuss both on-camera flash and off-camera flash. The class will not cover large studio-type flash photography. This class is intended for photographers with a digital SLR camera and an optional flash that fits on the hot shoe on top of the camera; it is not designed for point and shoot cameras.
