GARDEN OFFERS VARIETY IN CONTINUING EDUCATION CLASSES
BELMONT, N.C. Fly fishing, butterfly gardening and urban chicken farming are just a few of the classes offered at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden this June.

Horticulture & Wildlife
Annuals Around the Color Wheel, instructed by Pat Linton, Living Color - Saturday, June 2, 10 a.m. noon. Enjoy a discussion followed by a Garden walk to explore using annuals to create a colorful garden. Pat Linton, guest designer for the Gardens Summer of Color display, will discuss her techniques for using color effectively in the landscape and then lead a walk to see her work in action. This class is $18 for Garden members and $24 for non-members.
A Perennial Palette of Color, instructed by Kaiti ODonnell, DSBG Lead Horticulturist - Saturday, June 2, 1 3 p.m. Learn how to use perennials to create an ever-changing palette of color throughout the season. Class includes indoor discussion as well as a Garden walk to see perennials in action. Take one or both sessions. The schedule allows for different perennials to be seen at early- and mid-stages of the season. This class is $18 for Garden members and $24 for non-members.
Fly Fishing, instructed by Captain Paul Rose, Certified Casting Instructor - Saturday, June 9, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Learn the basics of fly fishing, including how to setup gear, fly selection, knot tying and casting. Learn local fly fishing opportunities and destinations. Licensed North Carolina Fishing Guide Paul Rose will include classroom instruction as well as field practice in casting. Bring your own rod if you have one, but not required. All materials that are needed will be provided. This class is $50 for Garden members and $60 for non-members.
Design Dilemma, instructed by Sherry Godfrey and Brenda Murphy, Living Color - Saturday, June 9, 10 a.m. noon. Stumped by a design issue in your landscape? Case studies are a great way to learn how to use design principles to solve problems. Bring a picture, drawing or description of your landscape dilemma and present it to the instructors and your classmates. The instructor will offer solutions and everyone will learn together. This class is $18 for Garden members and $24 for non-members.
Butterfly Gardening, instructed by Renelle Maddrey, The Butterfly Whisperer - Saturday, June 9, 1 3 p.m. This comprehensive workshop, will prepare participants to create butterfly gardens that will attract butterflies throughout their life cycle. Participants will learn how to establish and maintain a home-based hatchery, and will receive a custom-made hatchery to use in rearing butterflies at their own home. This class is $30 for Garden members and $36 for non-members, with a $25 materials fee.
Urban Chickens, instructed by Antoinette LaForce, DSBG Intern and Urban Chicken Farmer - Saturday, June 16, 10 a.m. - noon. Maintaining a few chickens at home is relatively simple, and the idea is rapidly gaining in popularity where homeowners can have them. Learn the basics through Chickens 101, including how to choose a breed, how to handle and manage your little flock, and how to assemble a simple chicken coop. The instructor will also discuss basics of laws, regulations and permitting relating to home-based chickens. This class is $18 for Garden members and $24 for non-members.
Annuals Ablaze, instructed by Janelle Dixon, York County Master Gardener - Saturday, June 23, 10 a.m. noon. Enjoy a lecture/discussion by an area Master Gardener about annuals that will ensure a dynamic and lively landscape. This class is $18 for Garden members and $24 for non-members.
Worm Bins: Vermicomposting for Home Gardeners, instructed by Instructor: Antoinette LaForce, DSBG Intern - Saturday, June 30, 1 3 p.m. Red worms are great for gardens! Learn the benefits of vermi-composting and then create your own worm bin to take home with you. This class is $18 for Garden members and $24 for non-members, with a $20 materials fee.
