GARDEN OFFERS DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS
BELMONT, N.C. Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden offers its popular photography workshops in June with courses designed for a variety of skill levels; from beginners to experts who want to hone their skills, the Garden offers something for everyone.

In order to accommodate guests with differing skill levels, the Garden offers classes from: Dave Kelly, owner of DEK photography, an internationally recognized wildlife photographer and an Adobe Certified Instructor and Katherine Leonard, M.S. Photographer. These instructors and the classes they teach are noted below.
Lectures and demonstrations take place in the classroom, followed by an opportunity to practice newly learned skills out in the Garden. Upcoming classes include:
The Complete Digital SLR Photographer, instructed by Dave Kelly, DEK Photography - Saturday, June 2, 9:30 a.m. 4 p.m. Take your digital SLR photography skills to new levels. Learn to capture the perfect quantity and quality of light. Topics include setting up the camera, using your cameras options to get the correct exposure, metering, depth of field and composition. Includes both classroom and field instruction. This class is designed specifically for digital SLR cameras and not point and shoot cameras, and is targeted to photographers already familiar with the basic operations of their cameras. This class is $90 for members and $100 for non-Members.
The Nature of Photography for Tweens and Teens, instructed by Katherine Leonard - Saturday and Sunday, June 9, 10:00 a.m. 1:30 p.m., and June 10, 1:30-4:30 p.m. Learn how to see the pictures you truly want to capture using a variety of proven photography techniques and assignments in the field. In this two - day workshop you will sharpen your powers of observation, experiment with different styles and even try your hand at environmental portraiture! Come away with an edited mini-portfolio of your strongest work. Bring a bag lunch on Saturday. This class is $75 for members and $90 for non-members, with a $15 materials fee.
Basic Flash Photography, instructed by Dave Kelly, DEK Photography - Saturday, June 16, 9:30 a.m. noon. This course covers the basics of flash photography using a single small flash, with emphasis on using an optional flash that fits on the cameras hot shoe. The instructed by will discuss both on camera flash and off-camera flash. The class will not cover large studio-type flash photography. This class is intended for photographers with a digital SLR camera and an optional flash that fits on the hot shoe on top of the camera; it is not designed for point and shoot cameras. This class is $50 for members and $60 for non-members
Available Light Portraiture, instructed by Dave Kelly, DEK Photography - Saturday, June 16, 1:30 4 p.m. This class covers classic posing techniques, lighting patterns, and how to achieve this using ambient light, reflectors and fill flash. This class is $50 for members and $60 for non-members
Intuitive Photography I, instructed by Katherine Leonard - Saturday, June 23, 9:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Come with an open mind and learn how to see the pictures you want to capture with your camera. This half-day workshop is open to all photography levels. It focuses on learning how to create more meaningful and expressive pictures using a variety of proven techniques and field assignments. Participants will shoot, edit and print in one class. This class is $50 for members and $60 for non-members, with a $15 materials fee.
Intuitive Photography II, instructed by Katherine Leonard - Sunday, June 24, 1 4 p.m. Building on the skills and observations learned in the first class, participants will improve their ability to create more powerful pictures by stretching beyond pure technique to reach new levels of proficiency. Guided by the instructed by, you will shoot, edit and print your way to a small portfolio of your strongest pictures. This class is $50 for members and $60 for non-members, with a $15 materials fee.
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3, instructed by Dave Kelly, DEK Photography - Saturday, June 30, 9:30 a.m. 4 p.m. Learn how the five modules of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom can help you organize, edit and print your images. Learn to create slide shows that you can e-mail and web pages for photo-sharing sites. While the software coverage is intended for beginning users, basic computer competency is needed for best success. This class is $90 for members and $100 for non-members.
