GARDEN OFFERS VARIETY IN CONTINUING EDUCATION CLASSES
Caring for a southern garden during the heat of summer can present many challenges, but Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is here to help. This July, the Garden will offer a variety of continuing education classes to help you learn about the needs of a garden in the south, how to maintain its beauty through shading and how to use re-purposed planters to put the fruits of your labor on display.
Upcoming classes in July include:
Tour of UNC-Charlotte Botanical Gardens led by Dr. Larry Mellichamp, Director of UNC-Charlotte Botanical Gardens. Saturday, July 10, 10 a.m. 1 p.m. Enjoy a guided tour through the new Asian garden that comprises part of the three-acre Susie Harwood Garden, the seven-acre Van Landingham Glen, and the McMillan Greenhouse complex. Participants can also enjoy a discussion session and propagation workshop where they can plant cuttings and divide herb seedlings to take home. Additional plants will be available for purchase. Cost is $35 for members and $40 for non-members.
Made for the Shade conducted by Barbara Albritton-Grant, Ed.D, DSBG Instructor and York County Master Gardner. Saturday, July 10, 10 11:30 a.m. Guests will learn an array of plants that will perform well in low light conditions and which provide color or have contrasting foliage that brings the garden understory to life. A tour focusing on shade plants in the Garden is included. Cost is $15 for members and $18 for non-members.
Re-Purposed Planter Workshop led by the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden staff. Thursday, July 15, 6:30 8 p.m. Continuing the southern traditions theme of Come Sit a Spell, the Gardens current exhibit, participants will create a re-purposed planter filled with seasonal plants for the garden, porch or patio. Participants can choose from a variety of containers and plants. Cost is $15 for members and $18 for non-members and includes a $15 materials fee.
The 30-Minute Organic Garden conducted by J.R. Stewart, Sales and Business Development for Filtrexx Carolinas. Saturday, July 24, 10:30 a.m. Noon. GardenSoxx, a new portable planting system, is ideal for todays gardener. In this hands-on demonstration and workshop, participants learn about this unique system, its advantages, ease of application and how to set one up. Participants will also make their own GardenSoxx mini-herb garden to take home. Cost is $15 for members and $18 for non-members and includes a $10 materials fee.
Bonsai for Beginners taught by Mike Brawley, Bonsai Specialist for Campbells Greenhouse & Nursery. Saturday, July 24, 1 3 p.m. With over 20 years of experience, Brawley will share his expertise in how to shape, maintain and care for these timeless bonsai beauties. Participants will receive a bonsai starter plant and wire, and create their own bonsai with guidance from Mike to help them learn the fine art of this ancient horticultural art form. Cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members and includes a $30 materials fee.
Spectacular Iris: Propagation and Care Workshop led by Robin Glover, Owner Pecan Grove Farms Iris Nursery. Saturday, July 31, 10 11:30 a.m. Midsummer and into fall is the perfect time to divide and plant irises. In this hands-on workshop, registrants actively participate in dividing irises. Each participant will receive a plant to take home. General care, maintenance and growing tips for this gorgeous perennial are covered. Cost is $15 for members and $18 for non-members and includes a $10 materials fee.
