Garden Offers May Classes for Adults, Youth and Families

BELMONT, N.C. – Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden’s educational programs for a variety of ages continue throughout the month of May. Classes include yoga, photography, horticulture topics, birds and more.

Upcoming classes in May include:

Saturday Children’s Yoga

May 6 & 20; 11:30 a.m. – Noon
Instructed by Yoga with Raha, Certified Yoga Instructors. Perfect class to transition to naptime! Geared towards children 3 and older, this class will focus on movement and energy release. This class is $6/guest and Garden members receive a 15% discount. Register online at www.dsbg.org.

Horticultural Highlight Walk

May 6 & 20; 1 p.m.

Join our professional horticulture staff as they take you on a custom tour of the Garden. Guides will highlight what’s in bloom, seasonally relevant gardening tips and behind-the-scenes details.

Saturday Morning Mixed Yoga at the Garden

May 6, 13, 20, 27; 9:45 – 10:45 a.m.

Instructed by Yoga with Raha, Certified Yoga Instructors. Make yoga at the Garden part of your weekly routine. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, you will find your center and get in touch with your body and mind. Intro to Yoga

May 6, 13, 20, 27; 11 – 11:30 a.m.

Instructed by Yoga with Raha, Certified Yoga Instructors. Experience the many benefits of this ancient practice including posture, flexibility, strength and suppleness. Master fundamental poses in a gentle and supportive environment.  This class is $6/guest. Register online at www.dsbg.org.

Pop-Up Card Making

May 6; 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Instructor: Lore Spivey, Art with Pop

Learn the art and technique behind paper pop-ups! In May, create a blossoming cherry tree card representing beauty and new life in Asian culture and a 7” X 7” lotus flower that can be used as is, or by adding an LED candle. In July, using ancient Japanese folding techniques combined with modern LED technology, learn to make ornamental Japanese string lights. Can’t decide? Digital SLR II – Advanced

May 7; 1:30 – 4 p.m. instructed by Dave Kelly, owner DEK Photography

This class will take anyone’s photography to the next level. Students will learn about metering to expose for highlights and equally important, how to expose for the shadows. Metering is the key to getting the correct exposure based on ISO sensitivity and ambient light. This class is $46/guest and Garden members receive a 15% off discount. Small Stalks Mondays

May 8, 15, 22, 29; 10 – 11 a.m.

Bring children ages two through five to explore nature in a safe, nurturing environment. Activities may include stories, songs, planting seeds, crafts and play in Lost Hollow. Please arrive by 10 a.m. as the activities are designed to be enjoyed for the duration of the program (1 hour). The cost is $10/session (one parent + one child) and additional guests are $6 each. Wee Sprouts Mondays

May 8, 15, 22, 29; 11:15 a.m. – Noon

Bring children under two years of age to the Garden for a morning of sensory exploration, singing and fun. This program will explore colors, shapes, movement and texture and a host of other topics in a safe and nurturing environment. Please arrive by 11:15 a.m. as the activities are designed to be enjoyed for the duration of the program. The cost is $10/session (one parent + one child) and additional guests are $6 each. Birding Walk

May 9; 9 – 10 a.m.

Stroll through the Garden’s Meadowood Walk and Persimmon Trail to scout for seasonal birds, observe nesting patterns and establish a basis for bird counts with Garden birding volunteers. Bring binoculars if you have a pair. Some previous walks have documented as many as 24 different species of bird! Free with Garden admission.

Sip & Paint

May 18; 6 – 8 p.m.  Instructor: Halle Russell, Artist & Garden Instructor

Follow along and paint a stunning provided scene! Includes one glass of wine, light snacks, and a painting lesson plus plenty of natural beauty to inspire your creativity. Must be over 21. This class is $30/guest and Garden members receive a 15% off discount. Register online at www.dsbg.org.
