Orchid Spectacular

Date & Time: Friday Jan 20, 2012 to Mar 18, 2012

Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden invites guests to Join the Expedition during Orchid Spectacular, its annual showcase of orchids beginning Jan. 20. The event continues through March 18 with a focus on the explorers who risked life and limb in exotic jungles to discover new orchid species.

This years Orchid Spectacular will feature colorful naturalized displays created with The Gardens collection of 5,000 orchids, continuing education classes, lectures and more. In addition, The Garden will feature the Art of Orchids which showcases beautiful antique lithographs provided by American Orchid Society Judge Don Osborne.

During Orchid Spectacular, The Orchid Conservatory will be transformed into a 19th century orchid hunting ground so that guests can feel as if they are on an orchid expedition. Featuring expedition gear, canoes and tents, visitors will get to see what it was like to suffer from Orchidelirium -- the Victorian name given to those who suffered the orchid equivalent of gold fever. And unlike those explorers who traveled for months and faced tropical diseases, wild animals and poisonous snakes -- a visit to The Garden is much safer and takes only a couple hours.

Orchid Spectacular will feature the North Carolina Piedmont Orchid Society (NCPOS) Show and Sale, February 24 - 26. This event is juried and sanctioned by the American Orchid Society and begins with the American Orchid Societys judging of hundreds of varieties. From the intriguing Bulbophyllums to the colorful Cattleyas, orchids will be presented in displays based on the theme of Orchid Expedition: Celebrate the Allure. Hundreds of rare, special and spectacular orchids will be featured during this annual showcase that begins at noon Feb. 24 following the AOS judging. The event also includes the sale of orchids and orchid supplies from the regions most respected growers.

Additionally, guests can benefit from the knowledge of the experts on hand through a series of informal talks, tours and demonstrations that will be offered throughout the Show and Sale by members of the North Carolina Piedmont Orchid Society.

When we began talking about this years theme, we realized this was a perfect opportunity to engage not only experienced growers but also people who havent grown orchids before, said Kara Newport, executive director of Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. By working together, we have been able to create orchid programming thats not only educational, but fun for everyone.

To prepare for Orchid Spectacular, The Orchid Conservatory features species and primary hybrids to give a more natural look and feel, said Jay Sifford, president of the North Carolina Piedmont Orchid Society and Garden consultant. Many of the larger trees within the Conservatory are now home to orchid species as well. These plants are growing just as they would in their natural habitats. In addition, weve also placed new emphasis on the ever popular Orchid Wall, the Epiphyte Tree, Reflecting Pool and the Orchid Case, which offers an interesting contrast to the naturalized displays.

Friday night, Feb. 24, An Evening of Orchids, will let guests participate in an elegant fundraiser that celebrates orchids from around the world. In addition to a magnificent display of orchids, the evening will feature a silent auction, delicious foods and a beer and wine bar. Tickets for the event are $55 or $85 for the Patron Level. Reservations must be made in advance by calling 704-829-1252.

Garden guests will be able to view some of the worlds most stunning varieties of orchids throughout the Orchid Spectacular season in The Gardens acclaimed Orchid Conservatory. Here the garden displays fascinating orchids from around the globe in a fashion that combines botanical splendor with creative artistry. More than 22,000 species of orchids exist on all but one of the earths continents, and intergeneric hybrids number in the hundreds of thousands. The Orchid Conservatory presents a sampling of these which offer outstanding display features and represent the great diversity of temperate and tropical species, from the hot, humid lowlands to the cool mountain regions.

Orchid Spectacular is sponsored by Rodgers Builders. Except where noted, Orchid Spectacular is free with Garden admission. Members are free, adults, $12; seniors 60+, $11; and children 4-12, $6. Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is open 7 days a week from 9 a.m. 5 p.m. and is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day. For more visit www.DSBG.org or call 704-825-4490.
