  Orchids: Sensuality Stitched

Date & Time: Saturday Feb 06, 10 to Sunday Mar 14, 10
9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Orchids: Sensuality Stitched will be on exhibit at the Garden beginning Saturday, February 6th through Sunday, March 14th.

"Orchids: Sensuality Stitched" is an exhibition of orchid-inspired work by Fiber Art Options, seven women artists from the Charlotte area who work in fabric, paper and thread. These pieces capture the exotic, sensual, colorful and sometimes humorous nature of orchids. The exhibition captures the exotic, colorful essence of the most diverse plant family on earth. Each artist created three quilts based on orchids from The Orchid Conservatory. A second series is comprised of a quilt from each artist based off of one photograph, creating a series of interpretations on a single image. With their mix of traditional and contemporary techniques, the exhibit will be sure to delight and inspire quilt enthusiasts as well as orchid fans as they bring orchids to life with fabric.

Grass Couches and Sod Sofas: Unforgettable Living Sculpture

Date & Time: Friday Mar 19, 10 to Saturday Mar 20, 10
9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Location: Outside Visitor Pavilion

The Cornell Garden-Based Learning Institute is delighted to introduce the wild and wonderful world of living sculpture—art made with plants that encourages meaningful engagement in the outdoors. From sod furniture and topiary domes to creative mowing and imaginatively grafted trees, you may be surprised to see just how many crazy possibilities there are with living sculpture. Come join us as Cornell Garden-Based Learning Institute’s Marcia-Eames Sheavly and Alex Lovallo guide a group of adventurous volunteers in the creation of our very own living sculpture by creating a Sod Sofa for the Come Sit a Spell exhibit! Stop by and observe construction throughout the day on Friday and Saturday, March 19th and 20th, and join us for some light refreshments and an inspiring presentation by the garden artists at an opening reception on Saturday, March 20th from 3-5 p.m.

Marcia Eames-Sheavly is the Kaplan Family Distinguished Faculty Fellow in Service-Learning at Cornell University, and serves as Youth Program Leader and Senior Extension Associate & Lecturer for the Cornell Cooperative Extension Service. Marcia brings a community- and youth development-oriented focus to program activities. Marcia was the recipient of the American Horticultural Society’s 2005 Jane L. Taylor Award, given to an individual, organization or program that has inspired and nurtured future horticulturists through efforts in children and youth gardens and gardening programs. In Marcia’s role as youth program leader, she has been involved in program development, producing signature projects such as Living Sculpture and Children’s Garden Consultants. Marcia teaches a number of gardening-related courses at Cornell and works continually to engage and inspire students through horticulture.

Alex Lovallo is studying towards a BS in mechanical engineering at the University at Buffalo. He graduated from Cornell University in 2005, where he became actively involved in the Living Sculpture project and created his first sod sofa. Alex says “Working with natural materials is a fascinating endeavor full of possibilities. Shaping the earth by hand allows one to connect with a project, and even once completed these installations never stop changing.”

This project received support from the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of North Carolina and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art; as well as the Gaston Arts Council.

  SeedPlay

Date & Time: Friday Oct 01, 10 to Sunday Nov 14, 10
9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

SeedPlay, a fiber art exhibit featuring the work of North Carolina artist Nancy G. Cook, will be on display throughout Fall with a Flourish at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden.

In her work, Nancy highlights the seeds and fruits of trees, bringing them to life with multi-media techniques including botanical illustration, stenciling, quilting and embroidery. The result is a unique effect that inspires closer observation of the beautiful shapes and forms of nature. Working from collected seed specimens, these unusual designs are based on research and sketching to clarify what is architecturally unique for each species and focuses attention on a part of trees that is often overlooked.

Nancy's work has exhibited internationally. Two pieces from the SeedPlay series have been published in 500 Art Quilts (published by Lark Books), and one will be exhibited in Birmingham, UK at the Festival of Quilts.

The following classes are offered in conjunction with SeedPlay for an artful and horticultural focus on seeds, pods, and winter gardening:
