Garden Adventure Camp 2008

What is Garden Adventure Camp?
Garden-based camps for children in grades pre-K through grade 6 (ages 4-11) that utilize fun environmental educational experiences to strengthen connections with nature through science and art.

What’s it all about?
This summer, nature will come alive through an interdisciplinary experience that infuses science with art and culture to create engaging adventures for kids. Camp activities encourage hands-on learning grounded in the natural setting of the outdoor garden environment. Children will explore the abundant natural resources of Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden (weather permitting) and take part in additional indoor activities and projects that support the theme and learning experience in each camp.

Age Requirements
Camps are offered for children in rising grades K-6, with additional camps for 4 year olds attending with a parent or other caregiver.

Location
Camps are held on the grounds of the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, with each camp located in a different ‘home base’ area of the Garden. Part of each day will be spent outdoors, weather permitting.

Dates/Times:
Garden Adventure Camps provide half-day, week-long sessions running from June 16 – Aug. 1, 2008. Morning sessions run from 9 a.m. – noon; afternoon sessions are held from 1 - 4 p.m. The modular format allows parents to create a customized camp experience for their children—mornings only, all day, or a few specific weeks—depending on their schedule.

Cost
Members $105, Non-members $125 (prices based on week-long, half-day sessions).
Lunch supervision for children attending both morning and afternoon sessions: $10 fee/camper/week.
Lunch supervision fee will be added to cost of camp.

Registration:
Camp descriptions are listed below. Register online or by phone at 704-829-1252.

If registering online please indicate in the QUESTIONS/COMMENTS section of the registration form if you are registering a child for all day camp sessions and require lunch supervision.

Pollinator Pals
Why do plants have flowers? Why are some flowers colorful, while others are small or plain? Why do some smell good—and others just plain smelly? Learn about plant life cycles through the eyes of pollinators! Play the role of a bee, hummingbird or other pollinator and discover the important relationship between plants and their pollinators, and then go on excursions to find examples out in the Garden. Campers will create a special Pollinator Planter to take home, and enjoy tasty snacks provided courtesy of pollinators.

Learn the “secret” language of plant names and then create your own. Explore basics of leaf and plant classification and then work with your camp-mates to create a Kinetic Key. Campers will observe details, make connections and record what they learn in their own Garden Journals, and create a Family Album Planter to take home.
